EU citizens already have a right to reside in Spain and do not require a work permit to obtain employment. You may enter Spain as a tourist and immediately register with the Spanish national employment office (Instituto Nacional de Empleo INEM). Once you obtain a position, apply for your Residence Card by showing your employment contract.
Although EU citizens are free to come and go in Spain, the Residence Card (the European Community registration card) is required in order to stay longer than a period of 3 months. Since Spain΄s acceptance into the European Union, this is the only formal requirement for EU citizens, to establish their residency status. Your Residence Card will include your NIE (Numero de Identidad de Extranjero) number. This is your official identification number in Spain and necessary for things like opening bank accounts, filing taxes, establishing a business, etcetera. A NIF number, is the same number as an NIE. However, this can be applied for, prior to gaining resident status and is a requirement for non-residents who need to pay taxes while in Spain.
DOCUMENTATION FOR OBTAINING A RESIDENCE CARD EU CITIZEN:
Your passport valid for at least 6 months
Three passport photos (avoid high gloss)
Medical Certificate if required.
Certificate of Marriage or other required legal documentation, proving family relationship, when applying to reunite family members.
Proof of income e.g. pension, work contract, or that you meet the required criteria to work in a self-employed capacity.
